Andy Murray has secured a place in the China Open semi-finals after beating his fellow Briton Kyle Edmund 7-6 (11-9) 6-2. The Scotsman took the first set in a tie-break but faced a break down early in the second set. Despite Edmund’s strong start, Murray managed to win three straight service games as he found his groove on the court. Murray is now set to face Spain’s David Ferrer in the semi-finals.
Prior to the match, Murray had expressed feeling “uncomfortable” about facing his Davis Cup teammate. “Once you get out on the court and start competing, it’s fine. After the match, again, it’s always fine,” Murray stated. Despite returning to action this week after a thigh injury suffered during the Davis Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, Murray has been dominating the tournament.
On the other hand, Kyle Edmund had defeated Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4 4-6 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals. Although he lost to Murray, the Yorkshireman is on track to break into the world’s top 50. In the tie-break, Edmund held a 5-2 lead but was unable to secure the win as Murray eventually clinched it 11-9 with a powerful serve.
